Long Island Rail Road
In 1844, Cornelius Vanderbilt extended the railroad here to connect Brooklyn to Boston. Passengers would arrive to Greenport in under four hours, then take a steam power side-wheel ferry to Stonington, Connecticut, where a train connection took them to Boston. The nine hour journey cost $2.25.
